Oooooo, i am SO JEALOUS that i can't be there for this. Please enjoy lots of good food for me. I wonder if my parents are going to any festivities. If you see them, say hi for me!

I can't get on the twitter at work. but my favorite memory of sxm is actually from just a few years ago, before my parents moved back. I was on a WORK trip (can you believe that), staying at Maho, and I extended my visit by one day so I could chill. I took a cab to Friars bay. Set up in front of Kali's. Ordered a drink. And went to sleep. The smell of the ocean, sound of the waves...it lulled me into the most calm feeling I have ever experienced. it's what happens to me on that island (when i'm not being shuttled from relative to relative)...i'm sure things would be different if i lived there, but for me, being able to leave all my stress and worries in the states and be by the warm ocean, that's heaven for me. less than 2 months! I will see you at guana!!!! (you better be around at xmas!)

AH, SOUSE. It was a staple growing up in my house. My dad would make a batch every new years eve, that only he and my mom would eat. Funny thing is, it smelled GREAT. And then you realized what was in it.

But they only made it on new years eve (or old years night as they would call it)...never any other day! Go figure.

But everything else on that menu sounds great. I tried to make some johnny cakes today and i JUST can't get the recipe right! it drives me INSANE!

Hi Carolyn - Nope, as far as I know the store is owned by a local business group that has several markets on the island. I checked the logo online and it is slightly different (just wanted to know how far they were taking the copying thing).

There are a few businesses on island that have names similar but not quite the same as US stores. 7 Alive, for example, and there used to be a footwear store on Front Street called I think Athlete's Feet. Fun stuff.

But this Fresh Market does at least try to live up to its name. When I go there I find very nice produce in a good variety, so I like it.

I am surprised as well that I picked it up! I was so flabbergasted to see it in my house that I picked it up without thought. I try to be pretty stoic about bugs since there is no choice but to deal with icky ones down here, but when it moved I think my hair jumped off my head.

That is the lovely thing about a having a blog, though. You can take pictures and say Look! Ewww! I keep the camera ready for that very purpose.

Hi all -

I agree it is surprising Sissi, what I hear all the time is that it is expensive, and that windmills have to be very tall. It'd be great to see neighborhoods pool together for windmills+generators but that takes a strong neighborhood community.
